Just a quick one today, because I'm trying to write half a dozen other things. :-)

Previous poll review
In the phone poll, 61% of respondents hold the phone to their ear, 40.7% put the call on speaker, and 28.8% wear an earpiece or headphones.

In ticky-boxes, cats with resting blep face came second to hugs, 61% to 69.5%. Thank you for your votes!

Reading
More of Inventing the Renaissance by Ada Palmer, read by Candida Gubbins. Andrew has started listening with me, so I needed a solo listen and, accordingly, am trying Black Water Sister by Zen Cho, read by Catherine Ho, which is great so far. (I've heard it contains one of my DNWs, so I'm approaching with caution.)

Kdramas
Finally finished Nothing But Love (it's so good!). Also finished Aema, which was fantastic, dramatic, pacy, with tons of complicated female relationships and femslashiness (fair warning: gets very dark in places). Two more episodes of Mystic Pop-Up Bar, which continues to be delightful, I did not see that romantic pairing coming!! (It's doing the Gobin "who is the reincarnation of whom??" mystery thing.)

In theory I'm still watching My Youth in the hopes it develops some/any dramatic/romantic tension... but now You and Everything Else is out, who knows. Viewing time is limited.

More Low Life this evening, yay!

Other TV
Mostly Dark Winds and Bluey. We would have watched more Chief of War and Prehistoric Planet, but my Apple app is refusing to stream, grrrr.

Guardian/Fandom
So much is happening! It's great! The Slo-Mo Guardian Rewatch is delightful, [community profile] guardian_wishlist is in its creating period (which is always much too short, argh), and I still haven't caught up with [community profile] fan_writers comments. Also, omg, my tabs!!!

I nominated for Yuletide and am having some earnest conversations with myself about signing up. Last year was my first year; it was a blast, but it was a lot. I could always just treat...

Writing/making things
I'm very close to finishing the unexpected-kink fic (still needs a title), but most of my focus is on [community profile] guardian_wishlist. I've finished one gift and started another, which is threatening to get long (the joy and curse of rarepairs), and I have a laundry list of things to write after that. I'm aiming for, like, six or eight in total, by 6 October, but it will depend on whether I can write short.

Anyway, the current one is at least doing that delightful thing of occupying my brain when I'm not at my keyboard, making me jot down notes and dialogue when I wake up. I've missed this level of engagement.

Life/health/mental state things
Andrew's taking some time off work, which is an adjustment for both of us, and also great and much deserved.

Good things
Tuesday was a glorious sunny summery day. My new glasses are nearly ready. So Many Kdramas! TV-watching dates. Biking again. Bluey! Writing. Fandom and you all. <3

- I had a dream last night where I was in some sort of high-end, very posh mall, and spent ages looking at a mysterious cosmetics counter that had lipsticks that were exact matches for the OG Chanel Vamp and MAC Verushka. They had tubes of those discontinued lipsticks to swatch and match. I woke up as my dream self was about to spend $160 for two lipsticks. I'll admit I'd be tempted to do that in real life if the company did indeed have the OG tubes to swatch against.

- The US leg of the MCR tour ended last weeked. HOWever, as of yesterday, new ads related to MCR have been seen in New York, Detroit, Minneapolis, and San Diego. Some are just spray painted logos in parking lots outside of stadiums, but some have been bulletin boards and signs of either one or more of the band in the Black Parade uniform, or the Keposhka MCR logo. The fandom, no surprise, are losing our MINDS. Does this mean there's going to be another US leg of the tour? If there is, does it mean more weird storyline/lore that the band is potentially in some sort of stasis or time loop? (I won't give you the whole breakdown, but over the course of the tour Gerard has become more and more corpse-like; paler, wounds on his face, etc., and he's stabbed to death at the end of each Black Parade segment of the concert. There's more. There's a lot more.) Does this mean there's going to be a DVD or something? Should I start saving money for tickets and travel just in case? Who knows? Not the fandom, that's for sure.

- I've been tired ALL THE TIME lately. I'm sure some of it is the ambient stress level we're all dealing with plus the ongoing varying stress levels of work, but the rest may be my chronic health issues flaring up? My body trying to stage a coup and force me to rest? I don't like any of these answers.

- I'm finally getting back into a rhythm of witchy things. I'm pulling a tarot card most days, and I did some ritual work this week. It felt good. I need to do more, because it helps me approach things with more clarity and giving myself grace. And whooooo-boy, do I need both of those things.

So! How are you folks doing?

* I did all the prep work for the aggregate, but the HoA attacked again last Monday and I had to do terrible things to my body as a result. I'm a complete mess and I just can't do the posting this week.

How much I can do in the coming week will have a lot to do with how much the HoA wants to fuck me over because they hate my garden. Sorry.

* Monday, I really did need to do that cat errand, and also I needed some things rather urgently (I thought) from the ethical grocery. (I went to put one of them away later and thought, "You know what? This is a more logical place to put this" and it turned out that a Millennial several months ago had the same thought and I hadn't clocked it. D'oh!) The two others I did need.

Someone attempted to bathroom harass me today, which is literally my second time ever, as I live in a sapphire blue queer friendly city in a very blue state. Boomer in a challenging tone: "Are you a woman?" Me hobbling past on my way to pee with my classic 'no time for your bullshit' city dweller walk, using an utterly scathing and cold tone of voice: "I'm a me." Asshole actually apologized! O.o

Boomers, man!

I came back eyes burning, soaked through with sweat, clothes stuck to me like wet tissue. Put food away, had a bath, then Livia lured me into the bed for pettins and I crashed for nine hours by accident.

Which absolutely makes me an asshole because people were very much expecting me for my usual Monday evening Thing.

I miss how it was here before climate change sooo much.

* The HoA is threatening us again. This time it's one of their things where they demand we fix whatever it is by Monday after next, but won't tell us exactly what they want fixed. I sent them email. I am making my best guess, but there is literally no way to know if they won't tell us.

This is normal for them. Back when they still spoke on phones, it once took about 15 minutes with a similar notice to get them to admit that what they wanted me to do was hide my potting soil and sweep the patio. which they could have just said in the first email. Just saying.

So I've hidden my potting soil and I plan to sweep, but it makes sense to wait as my best guess for the other thing requires me to get help from someone tall, borrow equipment from a friend and systematically move most of the plants.

They are claiming we have constructed something that is attached to the walls or ceiling, which we did not. The only thing close to that is tiny transparent adhesive hook things that were put up despite me trying to tell Goth Millennial very and over that we weren't allowed to do that and eventually begging them not to, but they were determined.

I know I should have tried to physically block them but I was exhausted from trying to talk them out of doing it at that point, so it is my fault.

They are fingernail sized and have been there about four years without anyone noticing, but it's tyhe only thing I can think of short of them thinking the plant shelving that's been there since the Spring after we moved in or the plant shelving from a year and a half ago have since then been nailed to the wall or something. IDK.

The stupid adhesive hooks are way out of my reach even with our step ladder which is why I didn't take them down right after they put them up. We don't own a hair dryer. The scraper I used to try and entirely fail to get the massive ones they put on my bathroom mirror without my knowledge or concent is also missing. (I thought I'd taken it to the kitchen to be cleaned after the Incident, but it's not in either of the logical places for it and I've had no luck in sporadic searching since then, so I must not have.

I did look for non-hair dryer sollutions to adhesive hook removal on the internet and used the nightmare ones on the bathroom mirror for testing. Rubbing alchohol does not work. Finger nail polish remover loosened it up enough for me with a lot of time and elbow grease to pry them off with a knife. (I didn't try vinegar, as we had a positive result.)

The problem is 1. Squirrel really shouldn't be up on a ladder either for safety reasons as they are a fall risk too. 2. Gravity. How do we apply a liquid to something stuck to a ceiling? I am having trouble working out how to get liquid under enough to work.

Anyone have suggestions? This is already incredibly dangerous and physically taxing. The faster we manage it the less chance of serious injury.

* My body was not having Any of It Wednesday. When I did finally force it up to try to do necessary things it was painful and difficult and I failed my making food roll to the extent I mildly injured myself and needed to do Massive Clean Up and then had to start all over again. Ugh. And then my body through a tantrum resulting in hours of unpleasantness and pain. Sigh.

On the upside, New Millennial has lent us a ladder and also stained the wood for the bedroom shelf refurbishment, and it looks really good. Like, this is not quality wood. It was not the wood I'd have picked for this project; it was the wood the grad student that lived in my room before my bought heap when bodging together a make shift shelf.

It looks fine with the stain on, and I am sure it will look better shellacked and sanded.

This shelf is only going to be seen at a distance front edge on and by me from underneath, so the mild marring up top literally doesn't matter. I'm the only one likely to see it and only when I'm kneeling or standing on my bed to access the books there.

I am weirdly happy with it, even if it is still in pieces drying.

In other news, I do not particularly want to go to the doctor today, especially but the blood results are in and there are ISSUES. At least it is very, early so the heat won't have time to build up.

* Thursday was A LOT. I had an 8:05AM Doctor appointment which meant I had to be out of the apartment in time to get there. Which I did. It was originally intended to be a discussion of my hip joints, as they are likely best replaced before I turn sixty and if you figure in two separate operations so I can have a working hip while I'm rehabbing the other plus 1-2 years of physio to qualify for the operations, now is just about right, if you follow me.

So I'm going to need a lot of imaging, plus physio, plus a preliminary ostio appointment. The usual. Most of which also needs to work it's way through medicare preclearance.

We also talked about my blood work. The four things I didn't know how to interpret were related to the thing I did know enough about, turns out. Apparently, I'm only just out of compliance so instead of adjusting meds, we are doing wait and see. I vaguely remember this happening last year, which suggests I'm pretty stable at just over the line. I'm still going to try to work on it. Preferably when I'm not under constant siege from the HoA.

I completely spaced checking the pharmacy for flu and COVID boosters again, but I did remember to call when I got home and they aren't in yet, even though I'm hearing some North east states have them. I dropped my library books off, as I had a bunch including an ILL, but 9ish is too early to pick up there. I had the X-Ray order in hand and x-rays are walk in, but MRIs aren't and I wanted to check if the MRI cleared as if it had it made more sense to do both together. If it hadn't, best to do X-Ray early for the ostio and so my doctor could leverage it for the MRI and physio with Medicare.

Also, I knew I had enough gas to get home with plus a bit more, but I didn't like the idea of driving all the way to X-ray without gas. Which was a bit dicey as I wasn't sure if the money had moved to the card I use for gas quite yet. So I thought, I could hit OTC on the way to gas. I had a twenty and if the card hadn't cleared, I could still get enough to feel safe on the highway.

The Pharmacy was so alarming. Half the things I was there for were sold out of flat out gone with no card to show where they were. One of the things had an FSA/OTC tag, but when I got to check out it was FSA only, so there went half my twenty. Sigh. They change tags at the beginning of the month, but they've started changing eligibility for products every week.

Luckily, the money had transferred and I could get gas. I went home anyway, as I wanted to double check when the library was open and if I needed and MRI appointment or if I should just go get X-rays. Also I wanted to sit down a bit and make a few other calls.

X-Rays it was, so I did that, then took the back way to downtown for the library. I HAD intended to stop at the Indie Pet Shop again, as I realized the night before we were nearly out of Laxatone and Autumn blerping season has started, but I forgot, because it was hot and I was tired, sand at that point I was just thinking of home and food and a bath.

These x-rays were not nearly as painful as the shoulder ones, but a bit dangerous. Basically, we were doing Necromancer crotch shots. It was a series of three. One with me pigeon toed. Two with a leg up on a wooden block Captain Morgan Pirate style, which is dangerous without a crutch, but I managed. Me: didn't you used to have x-rays of flowers on your wall? Young tech: Maybe? Middle aged tech pops out all excited: We did! You remember that?

If I was going to be out and about in the sun this much, it was far better than it could have been. The sky was still uncanny valley empty for what should be the early rainy season here, and it was July hot instead of September mild, but the wind from Alaska was nearly normal so the air was a but better all of which is a vast improvement over Monday's Satan's armpit weather.

I'm still stuffed up from being outside, but it's more reasonable.

Which brings us to the HoA. Sigh. For those following they sent threat with a fourteen day deadline to be in compliance without actually telling me what they wanted done, because they are allergic to direct communication and prefer to make people guess. So half of it was the illegal structures connected to walls or ceiling, which logically only applied to the transparent hook things, and the thing they sent… half a decade or more ago that after fifteen minutes of teeth pulling meant they wanted me to hide my potting soil and sweep my patio, but realistically could mean anything. I hid my potting soil again as we were too tired to hide it during the Great HoA bedroom disaster and planned to sweep when we tackled the hooks this weekend.

They finally got back to me Thursday morning with more extremely vague stuff that was very hard to interpret because most of it literally didn't apply to me, and one specific thing which was easy to do. When I say the things they told me made no sense I mean one of them was the three bicycle limit, which is weird as I own no bicycle and have none on the patio, and a bunch of their complaints didn't apply to me as I am ground floor not an upper balcony. The best I could interpret I thought they maybe wanted me to get rid of the garden shelving. (It's out door shelving an in compliance with the rules, but I can't see that stopping them at this point and they kept complaining about structure I had at some point constructed connected to walls or ceiling, which they aren't but… idk Boomers threatening me and I have only a little over a week to sort it and who the fuck knows what they mean.) So I wrote back for more clarification.

I spent all fucking day trying to figure out how to salvage as much of the garden as I could and mentally tetrising furniture to make room fore things like an indoor gardening shelf. I was thinking I could at least manage that if I ditched a fish tank and moved a bunch of art, but what about the benches and which plant could maybe survive window placements for which there is not much room….

After my errands I ate, and had meds, and my anti-allergen bath, folded laundry and went to bed.

I am still not in great shape physically, but the improvement in air quality is helping. I had a long talk with a friend on the phone, wore myself out trying to do meds, dress, search my bedding for a missing remote, put the bedding back, and put the Tavy covers on the bed that I had to go back to sleep for a few hours. <.< >.> Disability is like that.

I then forced myself to climb into the hole between the bed and the closet to get a couple boxes out for the next level of sorting. I actually did two of the smaller boxes and left a large one out for later. It was late in the wee hours, by the time I'd done things like lungs, fed myself and beasts, etc..

Apparently HoA got back to me late Thursday afternoon with the actual list of three things they wanted done that they could have easily sent me Monday with the threat instead of once again making me do days of guessing and interpretation and teeth pulling and scrambling for equipment we didn't need and time wasting that I could have spent actually solving the problems they refused to communicate up front.

I am pretty sure they did not notice the adhesive, so fuck that, because instead we have to reorganize the whole kitchen garden and sweep under everything. There are things out there I physically can not move my myself and others I can't safely move myself. And they also want weeding, which concerns me as they might think things are weeds that are actually food or seeding for next years crop. I anticipate back and forth all next week over shit like is asparagus a weed.

Normally I wait for cooler weather for the end of season sweep and reorganization. Let us all hope it gets cooler this weekend. I also definitely don't like doing this while the tomatoes are producing as it's so easy to injure plants. Much better to wait for the die back. Sigh. Assholes.

Forage boxes Friday morning was extra exhausting as instead of leaving it at the patio's edge, they blocked the door again. They mean well. Closer is better, right? But if you put heavy boxes against the door I can't open it, so dragging them inside is So much extra work. The older, more experienced delivery people either read the directions or figure it out, but this one was very young.

I am trying to work out how to do the reorganization in stages, but most of it is basically musical chairs and will be hard to break down smaller.

I do think if I'm clever I can save most of the garden though. Hopefully. The tripod planter is mostly just seeding at this point. I could theoretically bring it inside for a couple weeks, for example, though it would be very in the way as I still have boxes in the livingroom from the Great HoA Bedroom Catastrophe.

If they'd waited another month I could temp store things in the livingroom so I could do things in smaller chunks, but it must be done NOW. Boomers always want things done now and have zero empathy for disability. As I wrote this I was trying to work out how much I can put in our tiny kitchen for the weekend where it will be very much in the way.

I hate the HoA so much and after what they did to me this summer, I don't feel safe here, but I don't have any options. I suspect I'm going to have to damage myself really badly doing the emergency patio reorganization, but there is zero choice here.

* I am basically using all the spoons on the garden. Friday there was at least reasonable air movement in the morning. I did make progress, but the lavender plant fell twice and I ended up putting it in a different time the second time because the pot was do damaged at that point. The previous lavender plant was killed my other people endlessly knocking it over. Let us hope this plant does better. I ended up moving it inside Saturday as it can sit on the windowsill with reasonable hopes of it and the cats not harming each other. The cats Do Not approve.

I had the area near the door nice and neat up until the lavender fell the second time. As I'd watered it after the first replanting, that meant I needed to wait for the dirt to dry, so I had to start over their Saturday morning. Sigh. The rest was nightmarish. The tomatoes were entangled as they were want to do, which made moving them around really difficult, on top of the weight of everything and the endlessly moving things back and forth trying to clean under them and trying to find some way to reorganize the HoA might accept.

Really, the simplest solution would be reporting the strawberries as that would be three birds with one stone solution wise, and I even thought of a clever way to do it, but it's monumental and I don't have that kind of time. Just moving the strawberries was a nightmare given the weight, size, and the dying oversized container they currently live in. Then there was the associated mess, and the compost that went over twice covering me and that corner with wet stinky compost. And I got trapped on the wrong side of the strawberries and ended up having to step in them to get out. I did manage to shift them back, but then the compost container that was not supposed to be a compost container, but by the time I'd discovered it a couple years ago was to late fell on the other side, meaning that was all going to need to dry again in the middle part of the patio. It was still wet there and in the strawberry corner Saturday, which means I need to tackle it again Sunday.

A while lot of tomato branches got injured and one got stepped on thrice.

My body started giving warning signs of collapse before I had time to tuck everything back in. It was a race to get everything hidden behind the front plant shelving that I came incredible close to losing. I was shaking, in horrible pain, my arms, legs, and spine all about to go on strike, covered in yet more bruises and scratches and splashed with liquid compost which was also all over my hands and arms, plus my close sweated through and stuck to me.

There was nothing for it but a bath, but my hands were shaking badly and mostly ignoring commands. I almost gave up and got in fully dressed. Luckily, it was one of the massive caftan sized shirts from Shoulder surgery, and the one that is no longer an Out and About shirt, because it unbuttons itself all the time. It had unbuttoned except for three buttons. They did eventually give in and I was able to escape.

I was drying off when I realized the phone was ringing for who the fuck knows how long. I had forgotten the pharmacy was delivering 17 meds from the Doctor's massive reup. (It is not all of them. Things like the lung meds, break through pain meds, other stuff I'd recently refilled weren't in there, but it was most of them.) I can not really hear the phone over the bath motor. Me: Shit!

They will only wait so long. So the curtains are all looped up and I'm naked and barely mobile. When I reach the office I discover a cat had knocked it off the hook. I hung it back up, but only the bedroom one was ringing, so I hobble that way and between cats and boxes, reaching the far side of the bed would be an undertaking. I was trying to work out a route when the hone stopped. Livia was wanting a pet. I'm extremely wet. If it's the pharmacy I need to dress now and speed gimp to the building front door because they have a strict policy about how long they will wait, so I'm trying to one hand pet Livia while getting fresh trousers from the window side drawer. The phone starts ringing.

It was Pharmacy, and I did just make it out to get my meds. That was the last call before she left, so it was a very, very close thing.

I went to bed early. (I do have the news prepped, but I haven't managed to post or scaffold much of it.)

I woke up with the shakes and a barely working right hip among other pain and breathing issues from being out in the allergens lifting things too heavy for me. Saturday was worse, because even though I made it out earlier, it was hotter and more humid with very little air movement.

I gave in and moved a bunch of things onto the front shelving, which is a Problem, as the shelves are too close together and I have trouble doing things like weeding and harvesting unless the containers are shallow. Also, this dense, it blocking a lot of the sun the tomatoes need. This meant I could nest some of the plant stands. I spent a stupid amount of time rearranging the same plants over and over, trying to find some way to make it work. I am likely losing most of the October part of the tomato crop and I am furious about it, because if they let me do this in November like usual I'd not be repeatedly risking and injuring plants that are right now producing and or in pollination phase.

And I'm going to be dragging them around again Sunday, so I can try to sweep again. Let's hope the dirt is dry enough. I don't expect the Boomer's can properly see the strawberry corner, and I intend to take the pictures they are demanding in a way that focuses on the two things they were more specific about. They were really angry about my garden chair placement which they found somehow offensive. It's in the way in the kitchen for the duration. It blocks the interior door, but as an upside, I can sit in it while I wait for things to cook. So my picture will show it's absence. I went super extreme in the most visible to them area, which I hope will be enough, but still, it would be best if the middle bit of the patio is dry swept instead of mud in the concrete divots, since if they get close from one angle they might see it.

I need to move stuff around again tomorrow anyway as I had an idea for tetrising in front of the strawberries so they can have light again, maybe, while I was in the bath.

I hate this. I know it's stupid, but I'm also really resenting that I can't look up from my computer and see my pinwheels spinning.

* My body did a hard pass on me getting up to work on the garden in the morning, so not only did I go to bed stupid early Saturday evening, but it was nearly 5PM before I was able to leave it. I did get out there and sweep some more, though really things had not sufficiently dried for me to really clean the center patio properly. I tried my clever idea at great personal cost because of the weits involved, and it failed, which meant I had to undo it, which was so much worse.

I did come up with something that mostly works, swept some more, yanked my pinwheels and took a picture to send the fucking HoA. They did not specify the pinwheels in the complaint, but I figure if they aren't in the picture they are less likely to arbitrarily ban them.

I strongly suspect they are angry about the asparagus and the greens that are in the seeding phase for next years crops and I will have to argue with them all next week. I'd love to be wrong, but the Boomers hate individuality and free expression and value respectability over livability and comfort.

I feel like I've been under siege more than a year with their cruelty and arbitrary demands for impossible amounts of money, refusal to communicate or take disability into account, the stealing most of my summer with the bedroom thing and now this latest bit of bullshit.

If they do pass the patio, I'll put my pinwheels back out and start slowly migrating plants back into more reasonable locations both for sunlight and me being able to access them. See how far I can push things. They usually only inspect once a month and by mid October a lot of things will be over or mostly over so the loss of sunlight won't matter as much. I can just prioritize the perennials, move more things inside.

New Millennial took good care of me tonight. In a little while I'll go bathe the ointment off and soak my poor joints and muscles.

* Squirrel Needs Help with Bills!

They've been running behind since last autumn because they got scammed, plus all the stuff with the Housing issues, plus the strike this Autumn. Now they had to quarantine for most of a week because of a dangerous exposure at work. They are fine, but it means they have a small paycheck right when all the things are due, including insurance and car payment to get to work, the Internet bill, etc..

Pandemic life
You just can't get fitted for new glasses in a mask.

Previous poll review
In the Spice tolerance poll, 44.9% of respondents can handle mild, 40.8% a vague tingle, 49% a distinct tingle, 34.7% hot, and 12.2% searing. Two people (4.1%) said to call the fire department. Of course, all of these assessments are subjective and contextual: I initially said "hot", but then decided it was probably only "hot for me". Also, 26.5% said it depends on the cuisine.

In ticky-boxes, chocolate came second to hugs, 65.3% to 79.6%. Thank you for your votes!

Reading
We finished the latest Rivers of London in audio, and it was fine. And I finished A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall, which suffered from my genre expectations, I'm afraid. Otherwise, the same as last week.

Kdramas/Cdramas
Nothing But Love -- one episode to go, and there is no way to make it last. (If anyone's interest, [personal profile] tinny made some gorgeous icons, yay!)

My Youth -- low-key romance with Song Joong-ki, partially set in the entertainment industry. As yet, there's no tension and very little plot, but everyone's pretty. I'll give it a bit longer.

Mystic Pop-Up Bar -- watched two more episodes. Manager Gwi will forever be my fav. I may have to go back to The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop, lol. And probably Family by Choice, too.

Aema -- I'm always delighted to find a kdrama Andrew will watch with me. (He's not really into romances.) This is set in the tawdry film industry of the early 1980s and based on a true story. It's about a celebrated actress who is tired of the exploitative aesthetic (antagonist, but I find her sympathetic) and an unknown ingenue who is desperate to make it, even if it means compromising (also great). It's about censorship, commercialism vs artistic vision, and film-making. Tonally, it reminds me of The Offer, which is a rec. We're three or four eps in.

Low Life -- (Disney+ does Kdramas) Two episodes with our tv-watching-with friend. Another period piece, this one about an array of scam artists and ruffians trying to salvage shipwrecked treasure in the 1970s. A lot of competing interests and macho posturing, and quite a lot of exposition, but I think it's going to be fun.

Other TV
More Chief of War (Apple+; yay indigenous TV; not very fun, but good and with that "prestige TV" vibe). Some Prehistoric Planet (Apple+ nature doco about dinosaurs, narrated by David Attenborough; really charming, quality animation, lots of cute baby 'saurs). More Bluey (we're going to run oooout /o\). Some Secret Genius of Modern Life with Hannah Fry (the episode about microwave ovens, where I learned a) that microwave ovens have Faraday cages to keep the microwaves in, and b) that if you shut an iPhone in my microwave, you can still call it (but not an Android) -- does this mean the little microwaves are escaping? /o\). Connections (BBC, 1978) episode 1, which is scientifically interesting while taking a dim view of human nature.

Guardian/Fandom
Fandom!! Our behind-the-scenes [community profile] fan_flashworks project went live yesterday with a Community Report, a Creator Report, and a comprehensive spreadsheet. We're so proud of this! A million thanks to [personal profile] treonb for working so tirelessly on it!!

Meanwhile, [community profile] guardian_wishlist is underway (sign-ups close soon! come join the fun!), the Slo-Mo Rewatch started last week (jump in anytime!), and I'm still doing Guardian polls, apparently. On top of that, things are hopping on [community profile] fan_writers (if you're posting meta about the craft or process of writing, please link it there!!). *collapses*

Films
Not seen recently, but Uproar! is on Netflix now (here, at least), and it's so good. My review from May: 2023 New Zealand coming-of-age comedy-drama film about a Māori teen in 1981, at a time when a tour by the South African rugby team was dividing the country, because apartheid. This film blew me away, A++, absolutely recommend. The theme plays out on multiple levels, the performances are great, and the setting feels very genuine and frustrating. It deals with racism in school, the community, the home, and by the police/state. Stars Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death), Minnie Driver, and James Rolleston (Boy).

Writing/making things
My unexpected-kinkfic is at beta. I haven't managed to start anything else yet, despite the vast wealth of Wishlist prompts. My brain keeps stuttering and deflecting (and to be fair, there's been a lot of mod stuff to do). Whenever I look at my WIPs, they slide right off my duck-back brain. I'm really hoping I can get into gear soon!!

Life/health/mental state things
Another political submission last Monday, and one due on the 25th. (I can't do them all, so I'm just tackling ones I hear about.)

I ordered my first progressive-lens glasses. NO WARNINGS OR HORROR STORIES, PLEASE! I'm already trepidatious.
tl;drI've been holding out for a few years now. But these days I'm juggling a) my main pair: 12-yo scuffed-lens cheapos from Zenni Optical (online) which work for most things but I have to take them off for reading, and the scuffs make me feel like I'm getting cataracts; b) single-distance intermediate glasses (computer, crosswords and, increasingly, reading); and c) ancient-prescription sunglasses which, again, work for most things, but I can't read in them, which is a problem at outdoor cafes. My sister had a terrible time adjusting to her progressives last year, and I've seen similar unhappiness on my flist at times, so rather than going to the discount place where I got my intermediates, I went to my opticians. The nice sales guy spent literally hours talking me through everything, showing me various layouts for different lifestyles, and deciding which system would work best for me. He let me take three pairs of frames home for a second opinion. And then spent maybe another hour measuring my eye position and sightlines in different postures. I'm getting clip-on shades to fit the glasses -- fancy! Hopefully this will see me right for a long, long time. (Bodies are so expensive to maintain, ugh.) Again, please don't tell me any progressive-lens horror stories or even ambivalent ones!! Good/encouraging stories are welcome, though.

Korean
So far I'm easily keeping up with reading through the Guardian subs (it helps that I pretty much know episode 1 by heart). I'm not trying to understand every single thing. My brain is enjoying the Hangeul, and the jokes are even funnier when compounded with the triumph of "Oh! I understood that!"

Good things
Saw a seal in the harbour while I was biking home from the opticians. Kdramas! Fandom. Sunshine. Sleep is just really good, yes please. Walking through trees. Partners who let you blather about fandom all the time. ♥ Cat. ♥ Bluey!

A week or two ago a dear friend sent me a care package of Trader Joe's marshmallows, which are entirely corn free! No corn syrup! No cornstarch laden powdered sugar!

This afternoon, feeling incredibly groggy, I decided I needed a cup of my fancy cocoa (with half a scoop of protein powder), and instead of using sugar or honey, I would use a few of the marshmallows for sweetness.

YES. This was a good idea. This helped stave off a mild panic attack because of my stupid brain deciding it wants to freak out over everything ever said to it. Cocoa and marshmallows made my brain be quiet. I need to remember this. Not the cocoa with protein powder, I've been doing that for a bit, but that 1) adding marshmallows is GOOOOOOD, and 2) maybe have this treat a bit more often because maybe it helps with the fucking anxiety.

So yeah. That's where I'm at right now.

The Vampire Masquerade Ball weekend was fantastic! My outfit was everything I'd hoped for.

To what will be the actual shock of everyone who knows me, I didn't go to Powell's. I waffled about it, because Powell's, but I haven't finished the stack of books I bought there last year. On the suggestion from someone on FB, the Renfields and I went to Black Cat Frozen Custard, which is a spooky-themed frozen custard place. It was lovely, but we weren't there for the custard, we were there to go to Conspirators Coffee Lounge, which is a coffee speakeasy hidden in the custard shop. You have to know the password to whisper to one of the staff at the custard counter. You enter via a door hidden behind a wardrobe, and step into someplace that looks like a reading room in an antique occult library; velvet chairs, (fake) candles everywhere, curiosity cabinets, a spiral staircase to another section, and so on. We were there strictly for vibes, but to our joy the coffee (and chai and matcha) were delicious!

The ball itself was wonderful. So many pretty people, guests and performers alike! If you are on IG, check out the one for the VMB. One of the performances was an aerialist who, instead of using silks or straps, used metal chains. She was wonderful to watch, but I felt they sympathetic need to coat myself in arnica.

Of importance to [personal profile] jengalicious: I saw your ex and his ladyfriend, but had no interaction with them. However, I can say that my all-white outfit was far better than theirs (I could tell he made her outfit by the usual last-minute construction flaws that were visible across a darkened room), and that he looks like the result of Baby's First Necromancy Kit. I took petty glee in both of those things.

---

Yesterday I woke up with a terrible migraine. See, this is why I make sure I schedule a recovery day after an event, because I know my body hates me. Ugh.

---

I may have figured out next year's VMB outfit. The white coat I wore for this year also comes in B&W stripes! All I'll need to do is remove that lace trim, add metal buttons on the front, and have the Madwoman in the Attic add pockets. Oh, and decide what color skirt and (sleeveless!) blouse I'll wear with it.

If we are singling out one group for a 2nd Amendment carve out, why isn't it the group most likely to do mass shootings and terrorist attacks?

* Thursday I had different time dependent errands. I was going to do several other things, including booster shots and blood tests, but I got a call about an hour before I left requiring me to be home by 1PM. Which means I still owe labs and needs my jabs. Sigh. Plus OTC and the cat errand.

I thought, I could go back down and do the medical errands Friday, about mid morning as a bunch of things arrived for me at the library since yesterday. I can time food in case they want fasting levels. Library opens at 10. Pharmacy closes for an hour for lunch. So does the lab, but 10 should be safe.

Then I check my email and Contractors are coming mid morning to do… I think the filter tank and extra grab rail by the toilet. If I still want to do labs and shots and library it'll be later.

In other email, the zoom meeting I missed for too many things happening in early August put off voting to ban my Pride and a bunch of my Halloween decorations. (I'm absolutely the target. We've been at war over it for half a decade).

Digging through the communications they've sent the last few days, it turns out they found yet more things not up to code during all the recent inspections, which is why the front door suddenly became wheel chair accessible a couple of weeks ago. The railing situation that fills me with alarm every time I have to go up that way when the elevator's not in service are in fact illegally unsafe.

The interesting thing was they sent a whole thing about needing an arborist to remove a tree yesterday? the day before? Anyway it turns out in the hidden meeting minutes they didn't publicise and hid in a hard to find folder on the website, that we were overdue on some sort of pipe inspection and unsilting. I imagine this is the same silt that destroys appliances that my contractors discovered independently, which I also suspect is causing serious water pressure issues in the bathroom sinks.

The tree's roots are inextricably involved with the water pipes. O.o Me: they deliberately planted a species of tree over the water pipes that grows to be 3-4 stories high and it never occurred to them that tall trees have deep roots. O.o

Note to self: Warn Squirrel they are getting kicked out of on site parking again, as the people we share the second spot with are using the one that's not getting appropriated for tree removal. I'm camped in dis

* It was nearly 10AM Friday morning and I was about to go drag in the forage boxes to sort, when it occurred to me to double check Email. The assembly went out of stock in the two or so weeks since the city approved the water filter, so they had to order one. They cancelled.

I dragged everything inside and geared up to go out. The window was a tad narrow as Lab lunch is 11AM and i got down there 10:25ish. There was a line, but I got in on time for them to take three big vials and one medium one. I did NOT feel good after between the quantity lost and the abysmal air quality from all the Wildfires. This despite me loading up on water all night in anticipation.

I tried to get my jabs anyway, but the new flu and covid booster formulations are late. Likely because of RFK Jr. deliberately delaying the committee that does things like pick flu strains, though they didn't say that part.

I have the Doctor late next week and I'll check then, but odds are on the week after. Sigh.

I dipped into the library and hit the discount grocery on the way home. It was so hot and humid that the frozen goods were soggy by the time I hit the register. There were delicate things on top of the box, so I left my books in the car on the grounds I couldn't carry them on the little fold out cart and unlike the groceries, the sun wouldn't damage them.

Then I needed food/meds. Then was putting groceries away and sorting forage and putting the perishables away. I needed a bath because of all the particulates in my hair an the way my eyes were itching. Tavy'd gone whole hog on the bed, which meant I needed to do a second load of laundry as I needed those pads to be clean and dry before I got up at night. If not, I'd have to steal from the sofa which would mean taking that apart.

It was a lot, especially given how fast my lungs had gone bad from being outside even masked. At least none on my joints popped out.

I skipped the cat errand because everything was melting. I had done what I could clustering all the frozen things together with the refrigerator stuff outside and then a layer of shelf stable on top of the box, but I was very glad I hadn't bought ice cream.

So I still need to do OTC and cat errand. Sigh. Plus there were things discount grocery doesn't carry, but those can wait. The other two can't.

I had to stay in bed until nearly 3AM. At least I finished my Gideon the Ninth reread.

I still feel terrible, but I expected to.

We still are waiting on three different city contractors to schedule, but that is no one's fault at all.

* I wrote a whole entry, hit the wrong button and lost it. I wish Tumblr's undo button were functional instead of made of glitches.

It is not surprising, but it IS very annoying that I am this laid up right now, between all the blood loss and having to be out in heat and extreme wildfire air pollution.

I did manage to finish my Gideon the Ninth Reread, my Rogue Protocol (Murderbot) reread and a rather meh (dated) ILL. I keep telling myself lying down accomplishments are still accomplishments.

All the lying down and staring at my curtain situation has led me to working out what I think might be the solution to the big gaps the replacement curtain rod is causing at the sides allowing passerby to see me when I move around in there. It involves yarn and a bunch of clips and the pins holding some of the art to my walls.

Unfortunately it also requires dangerous furniture climbing to get the thing down and later back up. Also the cats to not be camped in there. Also for me to not be dizzy. Sigh.

I haven't touched the box stacks in over a week and I really need to clear all those in my room and the living room before decorating season starts.

I had to strip the sofa down to the emergency last resort layer as I was too laid up to properly monitor the sofa in my sleep and thus Tavy went to town on it. This means that later I shall have to put the sofa back together which is an even harder and more exhausting task.

I did manage to do some more bathroom rearranging this morning at least. I also got two of the four cheap Ukiyo-e reproductions that got knocked off there pegs back up. The other two I had to toss as they were ruined. Look, they were small and cheap. I had them in there because I like having something serene and pretty to look at in there but the world didn't end if they were ruined. Still it's sad. I had them since the mid '90's or thereabouts.

I am tired, and so much not done this week. sigh.

* I intended to stay up and force an aggregate out, but my body vetoed that. New Millennial came and did dishes and made dinner and together we changed my bed sheets which is an epic undertaking. (Fitted sheet change is 2-3 spoons all by itself). The Shelf is put off until hopefully Wednesday. New Millennial went home and I had a long lie down while dinner baked.

I did manage to do the curtain adjustment. I decided against the yarn and changing the clips around seems to solve it. We'll see how it wears. I used to clip the ends to the rod, but we never did find the other half of the assembly after the Great HoA Compulsory Contractor Disaster. This rod you can't do that, but lets hope it's sorted.
