In today’s e-mail:

Thank you for your patience through this process. Just this afternoon,
we made a decision and offered the position to another candidate, who
accepted.

I know this is not the news you wanted to hear, and I thank you for
taking the time to come in and present your qualifications.

Just so you know, you were in consideration all along, but in the end we
felt the other candidate had a bit more experience to bring to the
position.

Thank you again, and good luck as you continue your search.

Damn. Maybe I should seriously consider looking for work in a field other than publishing.
